Auberge du Mocambo is part backpackers hostel and part budget-friendly hotel with a convenient location midway between Baie des Citrons and Port Plaisance marina.
The hotel has 32 air-conditioned rooms offering basic but clean and comfortable accommodation. Most of the rooms are private double rooms but there are also family rooms and small three-bed dormitories that are popular with backpackers.
Auberge du Mocambo has quite extensive communal areas including a small gym (essentially it’s just a small room with an exercise bike in it), table tennis, a TV lounge and a kitchen where you can prepare your own meals.
Free Wi-Fi internet access is available, but only in the reception area.
Although it’s not for everyone, the communal areas at Le Mocambo give it a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Staff are knowledgeable and helpful, and they are always happy to provide tips and recommendations to guests. The hotel also has a number of events and activities, such as movie nights and barbecues, which provide a great opportunity for guests to socialise and make new friends.
Although it may not immediately seem like a great spot, the hotel’s location is one of its strong points. It is midway between Baie des Citrons and Port Plaisance marina, which means that two of Nouméa’s nicest neighbourhoods are only a five-minute walk in either direction.
Port Plaisance is only a five-minute walk north from the hotel. Although a lot of Port Plaisance consists of apartment buildings, it does have a lovely yacht harbour and the Galerie Port Plaisance shopping centre is handy if you need to visit a supermarket.
A five-minute walk south from here is Baie des Citrons, which has a beach and a large choice of places to eat and drink.
The L3 bus route stops outside with regular services north to the city centre and south to Baie des Citrons, Anse Vata and Ouen Toro.
